Restoration Ecology - Native species, resilient ecosystems and community involvement continue to be at the forefront of Natural Resources restoration. Encompass Socio-ecological Consulting have lead in developing community-based novel research and restoration techniques for Lake Sturgeon, Arctic Grayling and Wild Rice. We have extensive experience in river restoration from in-channel to riparian design. Within each of these projects we have planned alongside the local communities to meet their needs and improve ecosystem and community resilience.
Fisheries Management - Encompass Socio-ecological Consulting has over 30 years experience in designing and implementing fishery assessments. From Walleye, Lake Sturgeon, and Trout to general fish community assessments we have been assessing lakes and rivers throughout the Great Lakes region. Many of these assessments have been published in peer-reviewed research publications and include habitat restoration, Lake Sturgeon, Arctic Grayling, Wild Rice, and genetic preservation of wild fish stocks.
Natural Resources Management and Planning - Encompass Socio-ecological Consultants coordinates with government agencies (State, Tribal and Federal partners), non-governmental organizations and stakeholders in the development and implementation of restoration projects. We help our project partners gain wide-spread support and seek funding opportunities to make projects succeed. We will work with natural resource managers and stakeholders to create partnerships where communities develop projects that create healthier watersheds.
Tribal Natural Resources Program Management - We have developed watershed plans, Inland and Great Lakes Fisheries programs, Clean Water Act (106) strategies, BIA rights protection programming, and inter-agency agreements and collaborations for Tribal fisheries and aquatic managers.
Data Analysis and Assessment – We have over 40 years of designing, analyzing and interpreting both qualitative and quantitative scientific data for fisheries, aquatic indicators, and human values/perspectives.

Organizational Capacity Building & Development
Grants Management - Encompass Socio-ecological Consultants have managed over 40 State, Federal and Foundation grants and assisted our clients in every stage from developing ideas, writing grant narratives, budgeting, form completion to implementation of their innovative projects. The diverse grants we have managed include those from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, Great Lakes Fishery Trust, Consumers Energy Stewardship Initiative, and Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Organizational Support - Encompass Socio-ecological Consulting works with non-profit organizations and interest groups to provide services when a unique expertise is needed or in times of transition. Treaty Rights Protection - At Encompass Socio-ecological Consulting we recognize the importance of honoring the Treaty rights that were secured by Tribal nations and how diminished rights poses severe risk and consequences to their communities. We have served as experts during Treaty negotiations, on litigation teams, and Tribally initiated research projects. We are committed to understanding the communities we work for and represent their interests and needs with cultural sensitivity and by creating learning relationships where beliefs and worldviews are shared. We believe that Indigenous Knowledge Systems provides valuable insight into scientific knowledge and enhances our relationship with the natural world as stewards.
Cultural Preservation – We have participated within indigenous cultures for over 30 years and have been honored to share in their storytelling, ceremonies, and learning about the sacred history. We have interviewed elders and youth, and held talking circles to help preserve their culture and incorporate indigenous knowledge into all aspects of natural resources project planning.
Community Planning and Engagement - Encompass Socio-ecological Consulting works with partners to facilitate community meetings, develop and give presentations on complex issues, and we have a passion for ensuring that all voices are heard. When our project partners have community based needs and questions we work closely to develop creative engagement strategies that foster partnerships based on legitimacy, respect and shared perspectives.
Stewardship and Management Plans - We have assisted communities in developing long-term planning documents that combine ecological and social needs.
Collaborative Strategies - Bringing together diverse partners for Natural Resources projects is rewarding and beneficial yet often difficult. We have expertise in bringing together large and complex groups to collaboratively implement projects by using iterative learning to develop trust, an understanding of shared and exclusive goals, and strategies to strengthen relationships.
Community Based Needs Assessment - Encompass Socio-ecological Consulting takes a holistic approach to understanding community needs for restoration projects. This comes from the belief that each community has unique needs based on their connection to place, histories, and watershed attributes. There are many approaches to developing a community based needs assessment at each includes developing a learning relations, or research partnerships, where collaborative and shared learning is fostered. We use Focus groups, questionnaires, face-to-face interviews and community outreach to develop a plan that meets our clients unique needs.
